Scooping a £250,000 jackpot on The Health Lottery has come at the right time for delighted winners Andrew and his wife from Cardiff

The pair are sipping pink champagne on a roof terrace overlooking London and they’ve just had a night in the swanky Savoy Hotel to celebrate scooping a life-changing £250,000 jackpot.

But the Cardiff couple, who prefer to remain anonymous, couldn’t get their heads round their Health Lottery win at first – they thought it was too good to be true.

“When I first got the email to say I’d won, I thought: ‘This is a scam. I wanted to believe I’d won, but I couldn’t believe it,” says Andrew.

“I thought it was a wind-up, but then I realised it was real.”

Andrew and his wife are still a little shell-shocked, and they haven’t even told their children about the big win yet, but they have got a few plans of how to spend their quarter-of-a-million-pound windfall.

“My initial thought was to top my pension up and then I worked out we could be mortgage free. After that, I haven’t really thought any further because it hasn’t sunk in,” says Andrew.

“I do have a dream of getting a jet ski. There’s a pier at the coast near us and you see people parking up their fancy cars and going out on their jet skis and I always thought: ‘One day I’d love to get one of those.’

"Now I can buy my own jet ski – and get a decent car to tow it, but I don’t want to waste the money. We do want to spoil ourselves a little bit."

For his wife, the win means she has peace of mind that they have the financial security they need, having poor health for the last few years which have been taking its toll.

Andrew and his wife had to cancel a trip of a lifetime due to ill health and hope to book another dream holiday next year.

“My first thought when Andrew told me about the win was: ‘We’re going to be fine, we’ll be mortgage-free.'

“You never know what’s going to happen and this money can help us make nice memories with what time I’ve got left.”

The couple’s positivity shines through and even though times have been hard, they’re grateful for what they have.

“We’ve always had a gratitude attitude because we’re lucky we’ve got a healthy family and I think it comes back on you,” said his wife.

Andrew agrees: “You’ve got to show gratitude and be positive. We’ve said all along, we take everything that comes to us.

"Seeing what my wife is going through, month after month, we’re building memories. And wow, what a memory this is.”

As a regular player of The Health Lottery, Andrew did have a few little wins before this, but when he saw the jackpot had gone up from £100,000 to £250,000, he was determined to have another go.

He was also keen to help the hundreds of charities supported by funds raised through ticket sales.

“We like to try and give to the smaller charities but when you play The Health Lottery you’ve also got a chance of winning,” he says.

In just two weeks, Andrew and his wife have gone from trying to pay off their credit card debts and dreaming about being able to afford to rebook their cruise to planning a dream holiday to see the Northern Lights. And they have a clear message to other players.

“Don’t give up, keep believing,” says Andrew.

“You’re buying a ticket, you’re supporting such good charities and if you’re fortunate enough to get those matching numbers it’s a win-win.”
